Its friday and that means VIDEO DAY. Today we bring you a store by 60 Minutes on CBS.
This is wonderful news story and will get you really excited about the possibilities of resveratrol. The doctor in the story says it has the potential to “change healthcare.” That’s a bit extreme, but for a Harvard researcher to even utter that phrase is big news. Even more exciting is that you don’t have to wait for the doctors in this story to develop a pill-based, prescription-only version of resveratrol. It occurs naturally in the skin of the red grape so it is already in red wine…and in MonaVie Pulse juice. (I’m still trying to track down exactly how much is in an ounce of MonaVie. The amount is definitely more than what the grapes themselves supply. some distributors have stated that 1 ounce of MonaVie is equivalent to about 30 glasses of red wine and I’m seeking verification. If that’s true, then wow.)
The science presented in this story is solid and compelling. What is disappointing is that Morley Safer leaves the audience believing that resveratrol is a thing of the future when it is not. This 60 Minutes story was first published on Jan. 25, 2009. It was updated on May 21, 2009. Italic text is taken from the CBS website.
Eighteen years ago, 60 Minutes first examined the so-called French paradox, which suggested that the French – despite a high fat diet and high consumption of wine – had a remarkably low incidence of heart disease compared with Americans. Most researchers agreed that there was something in the wine that offered protection, and a few years later, even the highly cautious federal dietary guidelines say that moderate consumption of red wine can be beneficial.
As 60 Minutes reported in January, scientists across the country have identified a substance in red wine called resveratrol that they believe might do more than just protect the heart, but could in very high concentrations significantly extend life by preventing a number of age related illnesses. If they’re right, we all may soon be taking a resveratrol pill that could give us an extra decade or two of healthy old age. .

Be aware that there are many different resveratrol products in the market offered by many different companies. A quick Google search will reveal that many of these companies have angered consumers over long-term auto-ship contracts that are difficult to terminate. A wonderful resource to tap into is www.ConsumerLab.com. Consumer Lab conducts independent testing on thousands of health and nutrition products to provide consumers with reliable information. I haven’t seen their report on resveratrol and how MonaVie Pulse stacks up. If anyone has it, please send it to me.
